The silence stretched on between the two of them, a yawning pit that neither one seemed to be able to breach with words, growing deeper every year. They began to feel like they were total strangers, no matter that they had slept together every night since their marriage.

When he was sent to Azkaban, she did not bother with tears or owls. There was too much to say and no chance of his understanding this late in the game.

Thus, when Lucius escaped from prison and returned to Malfoy Manor, he was not very surprised not to find Narcissa there.
